Threat of starvation: UN calls for access to besieged cities in Ukraine

One third of the country's population and more than half (60%) of IDPs are concerned about finding enough food to meet basic needs. Such data are provided in the World Food Program.

The UN World Food Program has called for unhindered access to families in conflict zones and surrounded cities of Ukraine.

“It's one thing for people to suffer the devastation of war. It's a different matter when they die of hunger, “said WFP Executive Director David Beasley on the WFP (World Food Program) website. more than 100,000 people are trapped. The last stocks of food and water are running out in the besieged settlement. Humanitarian aid has not been allowed there for about two weeks. WFP Chairman Beasley traveled to Bucha on Thursday to see for himself the operations carried out in the area with the help of local church communities. He also spoke with women and children at the Center for Displaced Persons.

“I'm shocked . The horrors of war are so visible here, and I tremble to see these people survive, ”he said as he walked the streets covered in unexploded mortar shells and visited a bombed orphanage.

More than 7 million people are believed to be internally displaced. in Ukraine, pre-conflict food supply systems have failed in many areas. According to the WFP, one third of the country's population and more than half (60 percent) of internally displaced persons are concerned about finding enough food to meet basic needs.
