The US wants to change the rules for using the veto in the UN Security Council because of Russia's aggression against Ukraine

Previously, Ukraine demanded that the Russian Federation be stripped of its membership in the organization due to unprovoked military aggression.

Russia's military aggression against Ukraine caused anger and indignation in many countries of the world and entailed the exclusion of the Russian Federation from some international organizations. Official Kyiv demanded that the West deprive the enemy of its membership in the UN Security Council, but this has not happened yet. Instead, the US plans to discuss with its partners the reform of the Security Council, in particular the rules for issuing a veto, which the aggressor country often uses to its advantage. This was announced by the US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield at a briefing during the 77th session of the General Assembly.

According to her, the USA is in favor of reforming the Security Council, as the current situation in Ukraine shows that some countries are not going to abide by the UN Charter, but are only taking advantage of provisions, while committing crimes against the international order.

“We will strengthen efforts to reform the Security Council. It is also about changing the veto rules, according to which permanent members will have to explain them to the General Assembly. The Security Council should also better reflect the global reality and take into account geographical representation. We must not maintain the outdated status quo. Instead, we should show flexibility for compromise in the name of responsibility,” Thomas-Greenfield said.

The US Permanent Representative to the UN emphasized that the Russian Federation violated national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, violated human rights and unleashed an open war, thereby “striking a blow to the very basis of the UN Charter”.
