The US does not support a complete ban on issuing visas to Russians

The US believes that those who disagree with the Kremlin's policy have the right to receive aid.

The United States does not support a complete visa ban to Russian citizens, a representative of the State Department said on Monday.

“The United States would not like to close the ways of obtaining asylum and safety for Russian dissidents or other persons vulnerable to human rights violations. It was also clear to us that it is important to draw a line between the actions of the Russian government and its policies in Ukraine and the people of Russia,” the official said in a statement.

He added that the United States “worked with allies and partners to impose sanctions, including visa restrictions on Kremlin officials and their aides.”

“Effective February 24, 2022, the United States has taken steps to impose visa restrictions on nearly 5,000 individuals in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine,” the statement said. “We will continue to identify those involved in the Russian invasion and call them to account for their behavior. We are looking for all the tools to bring the Kremlin to justice,” reports CNN.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba predicted that not all EU countries would support the abolition of visas for Russians.

Let us remind you that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, called to deprive citizens of the Russian Federation of the opportunity to enter European countries.

But now the EU does not have a consensus on this issue. A number of countries insist on a ban, because citizens of the Russian Federation must be responsible for the actions of their authorities. Other states adhere to the opinion voiced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that “this will create a danger for opponents of the Putin regime”. Germany, Greece, Cyprus spoke, Portugal.
