Russia, being a permanent member of the Organization on Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and with a veto in the United Nations (UN) Security Council , invaded the territory of Ukraine, and these organizations did not work. “How can the UN Security Council, where Moscow is a permanent member, fulfill its mission to maintain peace? What kind of security and cooperation in Europe can we talk about when one OSCE member state attacked another and killed thousands of civilians? These organizations did not work. They should be replaced by a new and more effective system of international institutions capable of serving the interests of all countries, not just large states, “wrote Alexei Reznikov.
According to the Minister, the architecture of the new security system should be based on the experience of Ukraine, which in 1994 abandoned the world's third nuclear potential, trusting the promises. In 2008, Germany and France blocked Ukraine's accession to NATO and later turned a blind eye to Russia's aggression. Reznikov is sure: this is what they encouraged the aggressor to continue such actions.
“In August 2008, Russia invaded Georgia and the world closed its eyes. In 2014, Russia attacked Ukraine, and the world decided not to intervene. Now Russian bombs are erasing our cities from the face of the earth, and the world is unable to stop it, – continued Alexei Reznikov. – All this could have been prevented if the West had imposed preventive sanctions against Russia and provided Ukraine with a sufficient number of defense weapons, primarily air defense and missile defense systems. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians would survive. ”
The defense minister believes that the West's response to such actions by Russia should have been immediate – within 24 hours, not weeks or months. And preventive sanctions should have been taken against Russia in peacetime. It is the untimely reaction of the world community, in his opinion, that has led to the fact that the world is now in a food crisis that could destabilize Africa and the Middle East.
“Until Russia is stopped, the crisis will only deepen, prolonging its neighbors and contributing to the collapse of economies,” Reznikov added, citing key conditions for ending the war: providing Ukraine with enough heavy weapons, imposing a total global embargo on Russian oil and gas, and sanctions against Russian banks. systems and trade and the closed skies over Ukraine.
