The transition to ruble settlements will throw Russian exporters out of world markets

The owner of one of the largest steel companies in Russia is convinced of this.

The owner of the NLMK group – one of the four largest metallurgical of Russian companies – Vladimir Lisin said that Russian metallurgists will lose world markets if they introduce a calculation in rubles for goods for export. This was reported by the Russian media.

Earlier, the Russian president signed a decree on the need to pay for Russian gas in rubles. Later, the speaker of the State Duma of Russia Vyacheslav Volodin said that the list of goods for export for which it is worth paying in rubles, should be expanded: for example, to include oil, metals, grain, coal and fertilizers. Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov immediately replied that, we quote, “the proposal deserves to be worked out.”

However, the head of NLMK says that for decades Russia has been fighting for export markets in 70 countries. It is difficult to imagine that global buyers will agree to the ruble and the associated currency risks: “Switching to payment in rubles will simply throw us out of international markets.”

Russia already has problems with logistics and transportation of its goods through sanctions. And the government's actions to support domestic demand are more local initiatives than really useful for business.

Lisin also mentioned state control over the prices of metallurgical products. He believes that the abandonment of market prices will lead to the cessation of production.

Earlier, Dmitry Peskov admitted that the Kremlin did not expect such sanctions from the West and stated that Europeans have an “extra chromosome” regarding “mutually beneficial coexistence with Russia.”
