The Russians need Zaporizhzhya NPP to “play on the nerves” of the West – ISW

By threatening a nuclear catastrophe, Russia hopes to restrain the desire of Western countries to help Ukraine de-occupy the south.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in temporarily occupied Energodar , is for the Russians an argument to intimidate the West. They hope that the probable nuclear disaster will deter the desire of Western countries to help Ukraine de-occupy the south. This opinion was expressed by experts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in their review for August 3.

“Russian forces stationed around the NPP have attacked Ukrainian positions in Nikopol and elsewhere in recent weeks, deliberately putting Ukraine in a difficult position – either Ukraine will fire back, risking international condemnation and a nuclear incident (which Ukrainian forces are unlikely to do), or Ukrainian forces allow Russian forces to continue shelling Ukrainian positions from an effective “safe zone,” the ISW report said.

The institute's experts also noted that Russian troops fired missiles at Energodar from neighboring villages in order to falsely accuse Ukrainian forces of shelling Energodar and creating a threat to the nuclear power plant.

Let us remind you that the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said on August 3 that Zaporizka nuclear power plant is completely out of control. Instead, the Ukrainian authorities reacted to Rafael Grossi's words with controversial statements – the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak called on the IAEA to inspect the ZNPP, and the relevant minister is sure that it is advisable to do so only after the de-occupation of Energodar.
