The retreat of the occupiers from Kherson may strengthen the influence of Prigozhin and other “security forces” in Russia — ISW

Supporters of the leader of the “Wagnerites” disperse a new wave of criticism against the current government.

The defeat of the Russians in Kherson caused sharp criticism in the Russian Federation from society, military experts and public figures. The retreat of the occupying forces in the south may become a catalyst for increasing the influence of the “security forces” faction in the Kremlin, in particular the leader of the “Wagnerians” Yevgeny Prigozhin, who previously expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the country's military and political leadership. Experts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) write about it.

According to analysts, the supporters of the Wagnerites and their leader are extremely dissatisfied with the decision of Putin and Shoigu to withdraw troops from Kherson. They openly criticize both and thereby earn Prigozhin “extra points” in the eyes of radical supporters of the continuation of the war.

Part of military bloggers of the Russian Federation directly call the defeat in Kherson “treason”. They claim that the Kremlin is constantly surrendering “its” territories without asking the opinion of the Russians. Others question the legitimacy of the declared level of support for the Russian annexation of the Kherson region in the amount of 87%.

ISW emphasizes that Prigozhin and some mil bloggers previously discussed the possibility that “Russian civil society” would come to the defense of the country. The growing criticism of the decision to withdraw from Kherson contrasts sharply with the general support for this decision among the military community so far.
