The Prime Minister of Italy promised NATO commitment to support Ukraine

Maloney met with the Secretary General of the Alliance.

Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Maloni promised her country's “strong commitment” to NATO and efforts to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine following pro-Russian sentiment expressed by one of its ruling coalition partners. This is reported by AP.

During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Maloney said that the best way to protect European security is to remain united.

“Given our main challenge today, Italy strongly supports the territorial integrity, sovereignty and freedom of Ukraine . The political cohesion of the Alliance and our full commitment to supporting Ukraine is, from our point of view, the best response that NATO allies can give,” she said.

Meloni, who heads Italy's first far-right government since World War II, strongly supports Ukraine. Her two main coalition allies, former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and League leader Matteo Salvini, have taken a mixed stance, and they also have past ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a few days. before Meloni was given the mandate to form a government, Berlusconi boasted that he had reconnected with Putin, and they exchanged gifts as the Kremlin leader celebrated his 70th birthday.

Maloni, in response to Berlusconi's comments, warned that there is no place in her government for those who support Russia.

Stoltenberg, for his part, thanked Maloni for Italy's current commitments, which he said constituted hundreds of millions of euros in humanitarian and financial support to Ukraine, as well as for the leadership of the NATO battle group in Bulgaria.
