The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer paid a two-day visit to Moscow, during which he raised a number of humanitarian issues on the situation in Ukraine. However, the official communiqué on the outcome of the trip does not specify any specific results of the visit or arrangements.

According to the ICRC, during the visit Mr. Maurer met with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Deputy Defense Minister Colonel-General Alexander Fomin and President of the Russian Red Cross Pavel Savchuk.

Mr Maurer noted the need to facilitate the departure of civilians from hostilities, stressed the inviolability of facilities such as hospitals and schools, raised the need to report all prisoners of war and facilitate the return of the dead, and the need for medical care in combat zones.

“My talks with the Russian authorities are part of the ongoing sustainable ICRC-Russia dialogue on humanitarian needs and international humanitarian law.
