Due to active hostilities, Donetsk region suffers from water supply interruptions. Constant shelling damages water mains and sewers, they don't always have time to repair them, and sometimes there is no one.
Against this background, the occupation administration resorted to a large-scale PR campaign: the leader of the militants Denis Pushylin said on the cancellation by the end of 2022 of the payment for water from the “Siverskyi Donets – Donbas” canal.
The fee for the water supply and drainage service will be “cancelled” for residents of the cities and districts of Donetsk region that receive water from the canal from March 1 to December 31, 2022.
If we set aside the PR component of such a decision, it becomes obvious that that this is another way of fighting dissent in the occupied territories and an attempt to “buy” people's loyalty.
As a result of the hostilities, most of the nodes that ensure the operation of the canal were destroyed or partially damaged, as a result of which millions of people were left without water. In view of Pushylin's statements, no one is going to restore the infrastructure.
The residents of Mariupol, in particular, receive water from the canal, but the occupiers cannot establish water supply in the city. So, people are offered to cancel the payment for what they will not have anyway.
In addition, all the “orders” of Pushylin and other collaborators are clearly illegal and have no legal force.
