Against the background of the capture of Ukraine's nuclear facilities by the Russian occupation forces, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, arrived in Ukraine. He plans to meet with officials to provide possible assistance to prevent the growing threat of accidents at nuclear facilities. This is stated on the official website of the agency , the visit was also confirmed by Grossi himself in his Twitter .
Among the priority measures in the department is the sending of IAEA experts to priority facilities and transportation of vital security items, in particular, equipment for monitoring and emergency assistance.
“The military conflict puts Ukrainian nuclear power plants and other facilities with radioactive materials in unprecedented danger. We must take urgent measures to ensure that they can continue to operate safely, as well as reduce the risk of a nuclear accident that could have a serious impact on health and the environment both in Ukraine and abroad, “Grossi said.
It is known that among his plans – a visit to one of Ukraine's nuclear power plants.
“The IAEA has developed concrete and detailed plans to assist in the safety of Ukraine's nuclear facilities, which include fifteen nuclear power reactors at four stations, as well as the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where radioactive waste management facilities are located after the 1986 accident,” the ministry said on its website.
The Director-General is expected to hold a press conference on his return to Vienna later this week.
