Decisions will be made next week.
The European Parliament wants to expand the list of EU sanctions, including the inclusion of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. The initiative came from the liberal group Renew Europe, writes Politico.
A draft resolution prepared by Spanish MEP Luis Garricano welcomes the EU's “reasonable sanctions” against Russia. The text of the document will be put to a vote next week, and calls on the Council to expand the list of people subject to EU sanctions by European members of the boards of directors of major Russian companies, including former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
According to officials, the two largest groups in parliament, the European People's Party and the Socialists and Democrats, have not yet agreed on whether to support the draft resolution. But Garicano and several other parliamentarians have said they believe he will win the majority's support. Olaf Scholz harshly criticized Schroeder for continuing to work for Russia's energy companies.
Recall German Economy Minister Robert Habek said Germany was “stupid” in creating the conditions to be half dependent on Russian blue fuel. He spoke about it on Deutschlandfunk radio, Bloomberg reports.
