The EU responded to Russia's demand to pay in rubles for gas

Contracts are signed with payment in euros or dollars.

ЕС дал ответ России на требование платить за газ рублями

The European Commission reminds Russia of the need to comply with the contracts, which stipulate that payment for gas is accepted by Gazprom in euros or dollars. This was stated by European Commission spokesman Tim McPhee at a briefing on Tuesday.

“The contracts were signed with payment in euros or dollars, so the G7 partners agreed to ask companies based in their states not to give in to this request. This is a position supported by our Commissioner for Energy,” said a spokesman for the European Commission.

He recalled that after the meeting, G7 ministers rejected Putin's demand to pay for gas supplies in rubles.

“G7 statements include EU statements, so it is clear that our position is the same as that of the G7,” said another European Commission spokesman, Eric Mamer. ..

It will be recalled that this was preceded by a statement by Putin-Peskov that Russia is not going to send gas to Western Europe for free. By “free” he meant payment in dollars or euros.

Asked if Russia was going to cut off gas supplies if countries refused to pay for it in rubles, despite Putin's demands, Peskov said: “No payment – no gas.”

After Putin's statement, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba called on EU countries not to comply with Moscow's demands and not to pay for the purchase of Russian oil and gas in rubles .

Earlier, the G7 countries said they would not pay Russia for gas in rubles . According to them, this is a unilateral decision and a clear violation of existing contracts.
