The EU reacted to the situation with the Nord Stream gas pipelines: “This is not a coincidence”

It promised a “tough and united response” if it proved the damage was deliberate.

The EU believes that two accidents at the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines cannot be an accident. This was stated by the EU's chief diplomat Josep Borrell, in his statement he expressed the concern of the countries of the block regarding the damage to the gas pipelines and what consequences this may have for the safety of shipping and for the environment.

“These incidents are not accidental. coincide and affect us all. All available information indicates that the leaks were the result of deliberate actions,” Borrell said. “We will support any investigation to establish the full picture of what happened and why, and will take further steps to increasing our resilience in the field of energy security. Any deliberate damage to Europe's energy infrastructure is completely unacceptable and will receive a strong and united response.”
