The EU is preparing to impose an embargo on Russian oil imports, but with some exceptions

The European Commission may not oblige Hungary and Slovakia to maintain an embargo on Russian oil purchases.

The European Commission plans to complete work on the sixth package on Tuesday sanctions against Russia, which will include a ban on the purchase of Russian oil. But Hungary and Slovakia may allow Russia to continue buying Russian oil, according to Voice of America.

Hungary and Slovakia are highly dependent on Russian supplies. Previously, Hungary has repeatedly stated that will not support sanctions affecting energy. On Twitter, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba thanked Slovakia for supporting Kyiv, which could be a sign of understanding the country's position.

Germany, the largest buyer of Russian oil in the EU, has long refused to consider the embargo , but has now stated that it will be able to solve the problem of oil supply. Russia supplied 35% of Germany's oil consumption in 2021, but has fallen to 12% in recent weeks.

The oil embargo is likely to take effect early next year.
