St. George's Day: traditions of celebration

Mothers ask the saint for a blessing for their sons.

On May 6, Christians of the Eastern rite celebrate a holiday dedicated to St. George, it is also called St. George's Day. The saint is traditionally prayed for protection from enemies and health for loved ones.

On this day it is customary to go to church or pray to the saint at home.

Mothers ask St. George for blessing for their sons, especially those who take part in hostilities, are in military service or are far from home.

In ancient times on this day it was customary to give gifts to husbands, grandfathers and brothers. It is also customary to pray that their lives will be long and joyful.

Field work began on the holiday. Priests came to the cultivated fields, sprinkled them with holy water and prayed for a good harvest.

What not to do on holiday

Forbidden swear, quarrel and gossip.

You can not use sharp objects, as well as sew, knit and embroider.

It is undesirable to touch the woolen threads and generally deal with wool.
