The Security Service of Ukraine established that he ordered the capture the city of Mariupol and to storm the industrial enterprise “Azovstal” by the commander of the 8th Guards Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Andrey Mordvichev. This was reported by the SBU press service.
“Since February 2022, he led the seizure of the territories of the Donetsk region and personally participated in combat operations against the Armed Forces of Ukraine. His subordinates include: the “1st Army Corps of the People's Militia”, a number of separate motorized rifle brigades of illegal armed formations “DPR”, tank and “Somalia” battalions, “Sparta” reconnaissance battalion and units of the “Wagner” PMK, – the SBU says.
Mordvichev independently carried out military planning, coordination and management of the invading units. He gave the order to destroy civilian and critical infrastructure in the Mariupol district, and to kill civilians. Also, under his leadership, the occupying forces committed atrocities against the Ukrainian military.
“While on the territory of the occupied part of Mariupol, Mordvichev held a meeting with Kadyrov, approving the plan for the final capture of the city, blockade and subsequent assault on Azovstal with the merciless killing of Ukrainians who remained inside,” the SBU said.
Currently, Mordvicheva has been declared suspect under three articles of the CCU:
- ch. 3 Art. 110 – encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, if they lead to the death of people and other grave consequences;
- ch. 2 Art. 437 – waging an aggressive war or aggressive military actions;
- ch. 2 Art. 28 – commission of a criminal offense by a group of persons based on a prior conspiracy.
