The Ukrainian authorities received information that Russian the troops mined the dam and units at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station temporarily controlled by them. The occupiers are deliberately creating the basis for a large-scale disaster that could lead to the flooding of more than 80 settlements in the south of the country. This was stated by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, during his address to the European Council.
“The dam of this hydropower plant holds about 18 million cubic meters of water. If Russian terrorists blow up this dam, more than 80 inhabitants will be in the zone of rapid flooding points, including Kherson. Hundreds of thousands of people may suffer,” he emphasized.
The head of state added that the consequence of the disaster will also be the destruction of the water supply of a large part of southern Ukraine. In addition, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant may lose water for cooling, which it takes from the Kakhovsky reservoir. Zelensky called on the European Union to act immediately in order to prevent the aggressor from realizing the intended catastrophe. He suggested creating an international monitoring mission at the station, noting the need to return our workers to it and immediately demining.
“Russia is doing this in order to organize another operation under a false flag – to carry out a terrorist attack and blame it on Ukraine. But we you and I know the truth. We know that this territory is controlled by the occupiers and what they were already capable of. They will stop at nothing themselves. But we can stop them. We can stop the catastrophic consequences. We can, and therefore – should!” – concluded the head of state.
