Russia took the newest submarine to the Arctic to test a torpedo with a nuclear warhead – La Repubblica

The “Belhorod” submarine also appears in reports on sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

Russian submarine K-329 “Belhorod” , which is a carrier of nuclear guided missiles of the “Oscar II” class, and which was accepted on the balance sheet of the Russian Navy in July this year, went to the Arctic for a possible test of the new super-powerful torpedo “Poseidon”, which can cause radioactive tsunami. The Italian publication La Repubblica writes about this with reference to NATO data.

According to known data, the “Poseidon” rocket can move along the bottom of the sea for ten thousand kilometers, and as a result of an explosion near the coast, it can cause a radioactive tsunami. The wave caused by it can destroy such metropolises as New York or Los Angeles. At the same time, experts note that the same effect can be achieved with the help of intercontinental ballistic missiles, which have existed since the 1960s.

“Belhorod” has often been mentioned in recent days in analyzes of sabotage on the Nord Stream gas pipeline. But Western intelligence is sure that the boat never left the White Sea. In fact, it was spotted in the waters near the gates of the Arctic for a series of secret tests,” the newspaper writes.

NATO suspects that Russia is going to conduct a test in the Kara Sea area under the code name “Status-6” of a 24-meter torpedo with a nuclear warhead, probably of two megatons.

“This is a completely new category of weapon that will force to change the planning of Western naval forces, which will lead to the definition of new requirements and new means of countermeasures”, – believes naval expert H.I. Sutton.

The probability of this step on the part of Putin exists, but it is not too high. As the former commander of the US Army in Europe, Ben Hodges, stated in an interview with the BBC, a nuclear attack will not go unanswered by the USA and NATO, so the Kremlin is in no hurry to use it.< /p>
