Russia threatens to “review cooperation” with the Secretary General UN Antonio Guterres and the Secretariat of the organization, if he sends experts to Ukraine to study drones which, according to Ukrainian officials and Western countries, were manufactured in Iran and used by Moscow in the war in Ukraine.
Speaking after a closed session of the UN Security Council regarding Moscow's use of Iranian drones, Deputy Russian Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyanskyurged Guterres and his staff to “refrain from participating in any illegitimate investigation.”
“Otherwise we will have to reconsider our cooperation with them, which is hardly in anyone's interest. We don't want to do it, but there will be no other way out,” he told reporters.
Iran and Russia claim that Guterres does not have a mandate to send experts to Ukraine to check the use of drones.
In a letter sent to Guterres on Wednesday, Iran's ambassador to the UN Amir Saeed Iravanistated that the invitation of UN experts to Ukraine “does not have any legal basis” and called on Guterres to “prevent any abuse” of the UN resolution on issues related to the war in Ukraine.
In his in turn, the official representative of the UN, Stephane Dujarric, said that the UN, according to its policy, is always ready to study any information and analyze any data provided by member states.
Polyansky did not provide further comments on the termination cooperation, however, commenting on the question of extension of the term of the so-called “grain agreement”, which the UN insists on, Polyansky said that he does not feel optimistic about its extension.
When asked whether Russia can withdraw from the agreement in case of sending to Ukraine experts to review the drones, the Russian diplomat said he “doesn't make direct contact yet.”
The Security Council held a meeting regarding Russia's use of drones in Ukraine at the request of the United States, France and Great Britain, who claim that the drones that Moscow is using in the war with Ukraine were manufactured in Iran and transferred to Russia in violation of the 2015 “nuclear” resolution.
