Russia has not been elected to one of the main UN bodies

This is the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Russia has not yet managed to get enough votes of members of the General Assembly UN to address the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) – one of the six main bodies of the United Nations. Probably the reason was the Russian war against Ukraine . This was reported by DW.

It is noted that after five rounds of voting, which took place in New York on June 10, Russia failed to get the necessary votes for election to ECOSOC, two-thirds of the UN General Assembly./p>

In particular, in the first round, Russia received 118 votes, which is 10 less than required for election. That is why Russia advanced to the second round together with Northern Macedonia, which unexpectedly showed the second result after Russia in the Eastern Europe region.

In the next rounds of voting, neither Russia nor Northern Macedonia was able to get the required number of votes. Diplomats attribute Russia's failure to the agreed position of Western countries, led by the United States, which has condemned Russia's war against Ukraine. It is noted that the voting date for the election of the 18th member of ECOSOC will be announced later.

ECOSOC coordinates cooperation in the economic and social spheres of the United Nations, as well as its specialized agencies. The Economic and Social Council consists of representatives of 54 countries, each region of the planet has a number of seats: for example, in Africa – 14, and in Eastern Europe – 6. Each country is elected to the council for three years by vote of the UN General Assembly. Russia is currently a member of ECOSOC, but its term expires in December this year.
