Reuters: EU diplomats predict date for signing oil embargo agreement against Russia

The EU plans to agree on the document, despite its dependence on Russian oil in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.

The European Union is still trying to agree the introduction of a phased embargo on Russian oil, which is part of the sixth package of sanctions against Russia. Despite opposition from a number of Eastern European countries, the agreement could be reached by the end of May. Four high-level EU diplomats told Reuters.

As you know, the European Commission has proposed to abandon Russian oil in early May – in response to the war in Ukraine. However, dependence on Russian resources from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia poses certain obstacles.

“There will be an agreement,” the EU diplomat said when asked about the dependence of some countries. A senior diplomat said an agreement could be reached as early as Monday, May 16, when EU foreign ministers meet in Brussels. A third diplomat said an agreement could be reached later, but within the next week. >

“This will be decided at the highest political level – between Budapest and Brussels. “I am optimistic,” the diplomat said./p>

Earlier it was reported that a decision on sanctions could be made on Monday, May 16, at the level of foreign ministers EU . Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleb has also been invited to the talks.
