The organizers of the action were several political groups, including the Communist Party. They said the central European nation should remain militarily neutral and secure direct contracts with gas suppliers, including Russia.

“The purpose of our demonstration is to demand change, mainly in solving the problem of energy prices, especially electricity. and gas, which will destroy our economy in the fall,” co-organizer of the event Jiri Havel told the iDNES.cz news site, Reuters reports.

The protest on Wenceslas Square in the city center took place a day after the government passed the vote distrust amid opposition claims of inaction against inflation and energy prices.

The vote showed how Europe's energy crisis is fueling political instability as soaring electricity prices fuel inflation, which has already reached levels not seen in three years decade.

Prime Minister Petro Fiala, who heads the center-right five-party coalition, told the CTK news service on Saturday that the protesters don't care about the interests of the country.

“The protest action on Wenceslas Square was called by forces that take a pro-Russian position, are close to extreme positions and oppose the interests of the Czech Republic,” he said.
