Speaking of support for historical figures, 90% of citizens have a positive perception of both Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Mykhailo Hrushevsky. At the same time, over the last 10 years, the support of Ukrainian historical figures has significantly increased, around which there were sharp debates in society decades ago.
Thus, the attitude towards Ivan Mazepa was gradually improving, to which 44% of citizens had a positive attitude in 2012, and in 2022 – 76%. 26% of Ukrainians had a positive attitude to Simon Petliura in 2012, 49% in 2022, 22% to Stepan Bandera in 2012, and 74% in 2022.
“It is important that a positive attitude towards the ideologue of Ukrainian nationalism prevails today in the south-eastern regions, and among those who speak only Russian at home,” the study said.

The poll was conducted on April 27 among the population of Ukraine aged 18 and older in all areas except temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbass. The sample is representative by age, sex and type of settlement. In total, sociologists surveyed 1,000 respondents using the following survey methods: CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews). Error of representativeness of the study with a confidence level of 0.95: not more than 3.1%.
