Nuclear weapons are the Kremlin's blackmail, but they are dangerous – the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia

The probability of a nuclear attack increases in direct proportion to the defeats of the Russian army in Ukraine.

The possible use of tactical nuclear weapons by the Kremlin is hotly debated in Russia itself, in Ukraine and in the West. Some experts call for Putin's threats to be taken seriously, while others, on the contrary, believe that he is bluffing. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkevičsdoes not reject any of the options, but is also inclined to the fact that the Russian Federation prefers to use such conversations for the purpose of blackmail. He stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.

“We do not rule out the possibility that Russia will use tactical nuclear weapons. However, people in the Kremlin understand that such a precedent will become a point of no return for them. Therefore, I do not think that this option is currently considered by the Kremlin as a basis for further operations,” Rinkevichs said.

Nevertheless, this kind of blackmail by Putin is still dangerous, since the probability of using nuclear weapons increases in proportion to the failures of the Russian army in Ukraine. Having suffered defeat after defeat in recent months, it is “losing its reputation both before its own citizens and before the world community.” This could lead to a situation where Putin goes all-in.

Rinkevichs emphasized that the West is preparing for any course of events. But so far, the question of a response to the Kremlin's escalation is not being discussed publicly.
