Newsweek: Ukrainian “Bayraktars” vs. Russian “Shahids”, which drones are better?

The publication writes that each of the systems has its advantages, for example, “Bayraktars” are faster than Iranian drones, but “Shahids” are able to carry more weapons.

Iran sent hundreds of drones to Russia< /strong>, ignoring American warnings. And these machines will be used in the war against Ukraine – the US intelligence reported.

The deliveries of drones indicate that Moscow and Tehran are building closer ties against the background of Vladimir Putin becoming a pariah in Europe. But they will also make the already difficult relations between the US and Iran even more strained.

Newsweek writes about this, recalling that the Ukrainian army receives attack drones from the Turkish company Baykar. The publication compares Ukrainian TB2 “Bayraktar” produced in Turkey with what Russia could get from Iran. CNN reported that Moscow most likely purchased Iran's Shahed-129 and Shahed-191. Tehran called the first of the two models its most powerful drone. So if Moscow got exactly them, it could greatly improve Russia's military capabilities.

Some experts believe that the Shahed-129 was copied from the American Predator that crashed in Iran. So Bayraktar vs. Shahid, who's better?

Iranian drones fly further and carry more weapons

Shahed-129 is capable of covering greater distances than TB2 “Bayraktar”. The Turkish manufacturer of Ukrainian drones claims that the range of these systems is about 300 kilometers. Meanwhile, Iranian drones are nominally capable of covering a distance of up to 2,000 kilometers, according to a report by the Washington Institute.

The Shahed-129 can also carry on board a load of up to 400 kilograms, while the TB2 “Bayraktar” – only 150 kilograms. It was also reported that Russia could receive Mohajer-6 drones from Iran. But the characteristics of these systems are more modest. The load is up to 100 kilograms, and the operational radius is up to 200 kilometers.

Bayraktars are faster and more durable

Despite the fact that Iranian systems fly further and are able to carry a greater load, the drones that Turkey supplies to Ukraine have their advantages. “Bayraktar” is capable of developing a higher speed than Shahed-129. The maximum speed of the Turkish drone is 220 km/h, while the Iranian one is 150 km/h. Also, “Bayraktars” are “hardier”. This means that they are able to stay longer in the sky. Drones, which are armed with Ukraine, can fly for 27 hours. Shahed-129's flight is three hours shorter, according to data from the Washington Institute.
