More than half of Swedes support the country's accession to NATO

Approval of NATO's course among the Swedish population will increase to 64 percent if Finland joins the Alliance.

In Sweden, 51 percent of the population is in favor of joining the country to NATO, according to a poll by the Novus Institute of Public Opinion. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine with reference to BFMTV.

A week earlier, this position was expressed by 45 percent of Swedes.

In its analysis of the data, Novus cites two reasons for this change in public opinion: the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and the debate in neighboring Finland, where they began to consider joining the Alliance.

According to the poll , support for Swedish joining NATO will increase to 64 percent if Finland joins the Alliance.

Data from other polls also show that most Swedes approve of joining NATO.

BFMTV says Swedish support for the Alliance is growing as the country's government prepares to discuss a possible abandonment of its current non-alignment policy. Sweden has previously reported that Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson plans to apply for NATO membership in the summer . However, Anderson herself refused to confirm this.

It will be recalled that, according to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, if Finland or Sweden decide to apply for NATO membership, they can count on a positive response and a quick accession procedure.

Meanwhile, The Times writes that Russia's mythical fear of expanding NATO borders, which has become one of the reasons for military aggression against Ukraine, is coming to life . Ironically, this was facilitated by the Russian Federation. In the summer of 2022, Finland and Sweden intend to join the Alliance.
