Latvia has banned Belarus from transporting military cargo to third countries through its ports

The Ministry of Transport is generally reviewing bilateral relations with Russia and Belarus.

Latvia has decided to terminate the agreement, which allowed direct rail connections for the transportation of military cargo from Belarus to third countries through Latvian ports, according to the website of the Ministry of Communications. This decision was made on May 10.

“Agreement on the direct transport of military cargo from the Republic of Belarus to third countries using the ports of the Republic of Latvia” was adopted by the government on January 25, 1994, when Latvia had not yet joined the European Union (EU). Latvia joined the EU on 1 May 2004 and became a member of NATO on 29 March 2004. In view of this, Latvia is bound by the legal norms of these international organizations, and the agreement with Belarus does not apply to these norms, “the Latvian ministry said.

Earlier it was reported that in connection with the sanctions of the European Union Latvia will block Russian social networks VKontakte (vk.com), Odnoklassniki (ok.ru) and My World (my.mail.ru).

According to the National Council, the platforms are owned and controlled by Yuri Kovalchuk and Vladimir Kiriyenko, against whom the European Union has imposed sanctions for encroaching on Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.
