Kadyrov and Prigozhin want to fight on, and some Russian government officials want to negotiate with the West — ISW

Despite recent denials from Peskov, the split in Putin's entourage is becoming more and more visible.

Obviously, Russia's so-called special military operation in Ukraine is not going according to plan, which is causing increased tension in the Kremlin. They are actively looking for those responsible for the defeats of the Russian armyand argue about what to do next. Two groups have formed around Putin: one wants to continue the war, and the other wants to come to an agreement with the West to keep its own assets abroad and ease sanctions. This is reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in a regular report.

Experts note that the main supporters of the continuation of hostilities and attempts to take over Ukraine are the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov and the head of the Wagner PMC Yugenii Prigozhin. They will probably try to achieve at least minor territorial gains in the Donetsk region in order to preserve their own popularity and reputation in the nationalist and information space.

It is reported that on October 6-7, Russian troops gradually advanced around Bakhmut and Avdiyivka, most likely with the support of the Wagnerites and Kadyrovites. According to Ukrainian officials, Prigozhin sent about a thousand of his mercenaries to strengthen positions in Lysychansk to secure the Russian front lines after the failure at Lyman.

At the same time, a group of government officials has formed in Putin's entourage, who oppose the further escalation of the war and, on the contrary, want to achieve at least some kind of peace with the West. First of all, they are concerned about their own property and assets, which they may ultimately lose thanks to anti-Russian sanctions. However, the position of “anti-war” officials is currently weak, because they behave cautiously and do not dare to express their displeasure to Putin.

ISW emphasizes that it is currently impossible to reliably confirm a split in the circle of the Kremlin dictator, but judging by the latest statements of Putin himself and constant criticism of the military, who direct the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine, the probability of this scenario is quite high.
