It takes two years for Bulgaria to give up Russian oil, Prime Minister Petkov said

Another country is asking for an exception in the event of an oil embargo against Russia.

Bulgaria will be able to abandon imports of Russian oil only in two years. Currently, the country does not have alternative sources of energy supply in the required volumes. This was announced by the local Prime Minister Kirill Petkov.

According to BNR, the politician said this after a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte. Petkov believes that Bulgaria should be an exception to the European oil embargo against Russia, as 95% depends on procurement in Russia. He hopes that the country will be able to get rid of its dependence on Russian oil only when the construction of a new terminal in Greece is completed.

“We are talking about the possibility of buying shares in Greek ports. I think that very quickly, together with Greece, we must invest in the north-south direction to create an infrastructure that will give us such an opportunity. We believe that two years, with intensive work, will be enough to get rid of the dependence on Russia that we have now, “Petkov said.

Interestingly, the initiative to exclude the embargo for Bulgaria is ready to support Germany, which from the very beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine is trying to protect their own energy interests. Petkov said this, saying he had won the support of German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
