The head of the patronage service “Azov” spoke about the difference in attitude towards the dead between Ukraine and Russia.
Ukraine receives the bodies of the dead from Russia in a terrible condition, in which it is almost impossible to recognize a person by eye, and sometimes it is not even possible to take material for DNA analysis, the head of the Patronage Service of the “Azov” regiment Olena Tolkachova said in an interview with “Ukrainian Pravda”.
“So that you understand, now we receive the fallen in such a state that it is very difficult to recognize a person – there are no tattoos anymore, the stage of decomposition is terrible,” she said.
According to Tolkacheva, the patronage service of “Azov” is working with the bodies already after the dead are taken to the morgue. In particular, they help to identify the dead.
“Since my girls and I have been working since 2014, we personally know a lot of people, so we can recognize acquaintances by tattoos, for example. But this is only the initial review and registration. Then there is direct identification by forensic medical examination or by DNA procedure or by some special signs,” she said.
The head of the patronage service “Azov” noted that she was even more impressed by the attitude of Russians to their own bodies dead, which she could observe during the exchange.
“With ours, I just can't imagine that they can afford it there when we don't see it,” she added.
Instead, the Ukrainian side immediately moves the bodies of the dead Russians to proper conditions for storage at a temperature of minus 22 or minus 32 degrees in special box-wagons. After such storage, the dead can, in principle, be identified by sight.
At the same time, the representative of “Azov” noted that the General Staff is constantly searching for the dead and forming an exchange fund for the return of the bodies of our soldiers.
