At the same time, the real losses are much higher.
From 24 February to 28 March, the UN recorded 3,039 civilian casualties : 1,179 killed, including 104 children; 1,860 were injured, including 134 children, mostly as a result of shelling and air strikes. At the same time, the real losses are much higher, as there is no access to a large number of territories where fierce fighting is constantly taking place. This was reported by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
According to the Office, the statistics are as follows:
- 1,179 deaths: 236 men, 172 women, 15 girls and 34 boys, as well as 55 children and 667 adults, the sex of whom has not yet been established

Other regions of Ukraine (in the city of Kyiv, as well as in Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Zhytomyr oblasts), in places that were under the control of the Government at the time of death or injuries to civilians took place: 1,702 cases (791 dead and 911 wounded).
In the vast majority of cases, civilian casualties were provoked by “the use of explosive devices with a large area of destruction, including heavy artillery shelling and multiple rocket launchers, as well as missiles and air strikes.”
“UNHCR believes that the real numbers are much higher, as many reports from places where such cases have taken place still require further confirmation, while information from some places where fighting continues is delayed. This applies, for example, to settlements such as Mariupol and Volnovakha (Donetsk region), Izyum (Kharkiv region), Popasnaya (Luhansk region), and Trostyanets (Sumy region), where there have reportedly been numerous deaths or injuries of civilians. persons. They are subject to further verification and are not included in the above statistics, ”the UNHCR concluded.
