Во Франковске театральные спектакли играют в бомбоубежище

Ivano-Frankivsk National Theater named after Ivan Franko decided to play iconic performances from its repertoire in the theater basement, which during the war became a bomb shelter, a place of refuge for both Ivano-Frankivsk and many visitors to the city, who today seek salvation and protection. Western Ukraine.

According to the director-artistic director of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Theater of People's Artist of Ukraine Rostislav Derzhypilsky, the Frankivsk Drama Theater in the first days of the war turned into a large-scale “theater-hideout”, a humanitarian cultural center “Resistance Movement – Aid Movement”. areas of assistance to the Ukrainian army and to support the many Ukrainians who find themselves in the city during the war, as well as to support the fighting spirit of the people of Frankivsk, for whom the theater in the city center has recently become an iconic and magnetic place on the cultural map of Ukraine.

The theater actively implements volunteer projects and at the same time, according to the artistic director, does not forget about the creative component of the life of a large theatrical organism. Western Franks have already initiated the theatrical (musical) project “Stolen Songs” together with the writer Yuri Andrukhovich. The aim of the project is to return to the bosom of national culture those Ukrainian songs (melodies), which in Soviet times were actually stolen by the Russians for propaganda purposes and later presented as the property of the Soviet song heritage. As an example, the song “Far away beyond the river lights were lit” about the Budennovs, officially signed by Russian authors Alexander Alexandrov and Nikolai Kool. In fact, the basis of the popular melody is the Ukrainian song “Farewell Cossack”. And dozens of such examples. Yuri Andrukhovich acts as an active participant in the project “Stolen Songs” – both as a writer and as a commentator.

Even before the war, the Western Franks organically adapted their large theatrical basement to a creative Shakespearean space. Loud performances based on the works of W. Shakespeare in the production of Rostislav Derzhipilsky – “Hamlet” and “Romeo and Juliet” are recorded here.

In the Shakespearean space for native theatergoers and for numerous guests of Frankivsk, there are also performances of “Aeneid” by Ivan Kotlyarevsky and “Nation” by Maria Mathios. According to the director, the current stage space of the basement-bomb shelter gives new productions new artistic and even ideological dimensions. “Our theater has become a safe haven for refugees and citizens, and we are resuming performances – in hiding. Today, our actors are working for the victory of Ukraine, as volunteers and as soldiers, including on the information and creative front,” said Derzhipilsky.

A special event in the framework of the bomb shelter took place on March 11, when the Western Franks for the first time in military reality played their famous play “Hamlet” with actor Alexei Gnatkovsky as Prince of Denmark (translated by Shakespeare's tragedy by Yuri Andrukhovich). Spectators of “Hamlet” in the bomb shelter note that the play in the current wartime markedly changed both the artistic rhythm and its semantic color, when Hamlet viewers perceive not only as a prince-philosopher, but also as a prince-warrior who seeks to unite in times of madness. kinship and state ties, and also tries not to allow an uninvited guest to his native land (in Shakespeare's story it is Fortinbras, and in our case “you know who”).

Prominent British Shakespearean scholar Michael Dobson (Professor of Shakespearean Studies, Director of the Shakespearean Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon) learned about the Frankish “Hamlet” at the bomb shelter through social networks. He saw Ukrainian Hamlet in peacetime, in 2018, in the same Frankivsk theater basement and left his enthusiastic response after the performance. Currently, the guru of British Shakespearean studies supported the Ukrainian theater in its creative and humanitarian actions during the war and for his part wrote about the desire to allocate several rooms in his home for refugees from Ukraine.

Upcoming theatrical performances at the Shakespeare Theater Shelter in Ivano-Frankivsk: March 16 – “Nation” by Maria Mathios, March 18 – “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. And on March 20 – the musical “Hutsulka Ksenia” by J. Barnich. One of the highest-grossing Ukrainian performances, the musical about Hutsulka Ksena in love, will also be forced to change its spatial format in the current military realities and move from the big stage to a safe haven – a theatrical bomb shelter.
