The Russians have lost the initiative on the battlefield and are suffering significant losses in Ukraine. In his opinion, Putin is waging an imperialist war for his own existence. That is why he cannot agree to peace in any form, since no scenario other than victory is unacceptable to him. Based on this, the head of the Kremlin will try in any way to reverse the course of hostilities, which is extremely unsuccessful for his army against the background of the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces.
Returning the initiative is a strategic goal of the Russian Federation and the only way for Putin to save face in the current situation, Limnell said .
According to the expert, after the failures in Kharkiv region and Kherson region, the Kremlin identified a number of tasks that must be completed in order to gain an advantage over Ukraine and its Western partners:
- increase pressure on critics of the regime and the “military special operation” inside the Russian Federation;
- turn the tide of war in any way;
- seize the initiative on the political front;
- find allies in the east or south to show “Russia's support in the world”;
- to weaken support for Ukraine through gas blackmail from Europe and information propaganda.
Limnell emphasized that a forced peace or a defeat on the battlefield would be a humiliation for Putin and would practically amount to the end of his political career. /p>
