Global land degradation – a threat to human existence – UN report

If the rate of global degradation of agricultural land continues, by 2050 their area will be equal to the area of South America.

Global desertification in less than 30 years will lead to that the productivity of agricultural land will decrease by 14%. This is stated in the “Global Land Survey 2”, released on April 27 by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, according to Science. three issues concerning the planet Earth as a whole and the existence of humanity in particular: the effects of climate change, biodiversity loss and threats to food security.

“If current trends continue, the area of degraded land will be equal to the area of South America, and global productivity of crops and ecosystems will decline by 14% by 2050,” – said in a statement. Sub-Saharan Africa will suffer the most.

However, people can reverse threatening trends. Through measures such as planting trees and stabilizing erosion on 5 billion hectares, countries can slow down land degradation, increase yields and retain more atmospheric carbon in soils. More than 100 countries have already pledged to restore 1 billion hectares by 2030.

The report says redirecting money on fossil fuels and agricultural subsidies could help pay for the recovery. It is also said that restoration means not only the creation of protected wild lands, but also the adoption of active measures to support agriculture, in particular, the preservation and creation of areas for grazing livestock and tree plantations.

Desertification This is not just a problem of Africa or Central Asia. And not only the southern regions of Ukraine, if we talk only about our country.

As explained in a comment to ZN.UA Deputy Director for Science of the Polissya branch of the Research Institute of Forestry and Agroforestry Alexander Orlov even in Zhytomyr Polissya, as a result of deforestation and changes in the hydrological regime, there are signs of desertification.
