Among more than 30 Western countries, In April, Germany and Poland made the most significant commitments to support Kyiv in April, IfW reported, citing the Ukraine Support Tracker database.
Since the end of January, the United States has provided € 10.3 billion in assistance to Ukraine. In addition, a few days ago, President Joe Biden announced a new large aid package of $ 33 billion , but a decision on it has yet to be decided by Congress.
Meanwhile, total EU aid , various agencies of the European Union and the European Investment Bank now amount to 12.8 billion euros, says IfW.
“Overall, EU countries are now on par with US aid, which is to be expected given Ukraine's geographical proximity,” said Christoph Trebesch, IfW's director of research. Germany ranks second in terms of assistance to Ukraine, taking into account support through EU structures.
Germany, which has repeatedly been criticized for being very cautious in supporting Kyiv, ranks fifth in the world in terms of direct aid to Ukraine (1.8 billion euros), second only to the United States, Poland, Britain and Canada. But if we take into account the indirect aid to Ukraine provided through the EU, Germany ranks second in the world in this indicator, the statement said.
Interestingly, in proportion to the country's GDP in the amount of aid to Ukraine first place occupied by Estonia, followed by Lithuania and Poland. The United States and Germany, which have contributed about 0.05 percent of GDP to Ukraine, rank tenth and eleventh, respectively.
