Georgia has joined all Western sanctions against Russia

Despite the recent rejection of sanctions, the Georgian authorities have moved to tougher rhetoric against Russia. Salome Zurabishvili has stated that she has joined the international financial restrictions on the Kremlin.

Грузия присоединилась ко всем введенным Западом санкциям против России

Georgian President Salomi Zurabishvili has said that her country is joining the collective Western sanctions against Russia. Despite initial attempts to gain neutrality amid a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the head of state said in a comment to CNN that the country now supports all international resolutions in support of Ukraine.

“We are involved in all international financial sanctions against Russia, and this really means something to our financial sector,” she said.

It should be added that the country took a tougher stance on the Kremlin's imperialist plans just a month after the start of the large-scale invasion. The head of state explains this by the common history of the countries in their relations with Moscow:

“It simply came to our notice then. We live in the 21st century. Some things need to change. We are witnessing global change. However, Russia's long-standing imperialist aspirations still exist. We understand Ukrainians, because we have much in common in the history of the last two centuries. Unfortunately, history repeats itself. But, in my opinion, everything will be different now. Because Russia's goals, which it has set for itself, are far from being fulfilled. “

Moscow's attempts to keep Ukraine in its sphere of influence will not lead to anything

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Georgian top leadership has stated that it has no intention of imposing sanctions on the aggressor country. Official Tbilisi continued to cooperate with Russian partners, noting that the decision to attack Ukraine would not hinder this cooperation. But the population of Georgia is more unequivocal in their sympathies, Georgians are gathering for thousands of rallies in support of Ukraine.

Zurabishvili, in turn, admits that Moscow's attempt to keep Ukraine in the sphere of its geopolitical influence by force will not lead to anything:

“The more pressure we feel from Russia, the more the European perspective becomes the only prospect for countries like Ukraine. And also for all neighboring countries of Russia. And this is something that the Russian Federation cannot understand. The more aggressive its policy, the more we will turn to a civilized world whose values we share and which becomes our only prospect. ”

Yesterday we reported that 145 pairs of children's shoes were exhibited in the parliament in Tbilisi in memory of innocent children killed by the Russian occupiers since the beginning of the war on February 24.
