European Commission wants to allow confiscation of Russian and Belarusian property without court ruling: the price of the issue is hundreds of billions of euros

A proposal to improve the current EU legal framework will be put forward in the near future.

The EU plans to facilitate the confiscation of criminally obtained property. This was stated by Vice President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas in an interview with the weekly Welt am Sonntag, which was published on Saturday, May 14, reports DW.

Thus, the bill proposed by the European Commission aims to allow the seizure of criminal proceeds without a court conviction. New measures are planned to be extended to Russian and Belarusian oligarchs and politicians involved in Russia's war in Ukraine.

“The European Commission will soon put forward a proposal to improve the existing EU legal framework on confiscation of property in order to strengthen the powers of national law enforcement agencies to detect, freeze, confiscate and manage criminally acquired property,” Schinas said. According to Margaritis Schinas, the amount of criminal proceeds in the EU is at least 139 billion euros, but this amount can be confiscated. only one percent.

He also said the new rules would help the European Commission enforce sanctions against oligarchs and politicians close to Putin more effectively.
