Europe may launch short-term launch of Nord Stream 2: expert points to danger of one of the scenarios

Why Russia chose the current moment to declare Nord Stream 2 is unknown.

If the transit of gas through the Ukrainian gas transportation system is stopped for some reason, Europe may temporarily agree to launch the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. This was stated by economist and financial analyst Alexei Kushch, writes “Today”.

Europe may launch a short-term launch of Nord Stream 2 if transit through Ukraine is stopped, “he said.

Also, Oleksiy Kushch suggests that even if everything is fine with transit today, the gas pipeline will become an element of bargaining with the new government in Russia, if, of course, there it will change to a democratic political force.

The economist believes that in the near future there will be many ideas on how to use the pipeline in Russia, as consumption of Kremlin gas will fall and fall by 30-40% next year.

In particular , one such idea was voiced by the Russian gas monopoly last week – to use the overland part of the pipeline to develop gas supply to the regions of northwestern Russia.

In this case, Gazprom warned, even if Germany reverses and decides to put the Nord Stream-2 offshore gas pipeline into operation, only one line of the pipeline can be included in the work (two threads with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year – ed.).

Similar statements by Gazprom analyst calls a euphemism (softened expression instead of sharp, – ed.) and why Russia chose the current moment for such a statement is unknown.

According to the expert, Russia can really use the part of the pipeline that is on their territory and does not go into the sea. But in general, this idea does not seem rational.

“It's just a good mine with a bad game, they won't get any effect at all. “Instead of making a profit or at least going to zero, they will spend even more money,” the analyst said.

The Russian Federation says that it wants to allocate the land part of Nord Stream 2 and it will become part of their gas transportation system. At the same time, the expert points out, Russia simply does not need such a powerful overland gas pipeline.

In addition, medium and low pressure pipelines need to be completed to ensure the northwest of the Nord Stream-2 capacity, which is a high-pressure gas pipeline. However, in order for Nord Stream-2's ground facilities to work in this way, more money needs to be spent on infrastructure construction.

Gazprom said last week that it had a new destination for Nord Stream 2, which has never been launched. In particular, the Russian gas monopoly has decided to use the onshore gas transmission capacity of the project, which is on Russian territory, to develop gas supply to regions in northwestern Russia.

Construction of the 1,234-kilometer gas pipeline between Russia's Ust-Luga and Germany's Greiswald began in 2018. Prior to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia, despite the lack of certification of the pipeline, managed to fill both lines of the highway with gas, and announced that the pipeline is ready to work.

After Russia's recognition of the sovereignty of the so-called “Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Olaf Scholz) stated that the German government is suspending the certification of the Nord Stream-2 project.

dependence on Russia. In addition, the EU is currently discussing an embargo on imports of fossil fuels from Russia.

In early March 2022, it became known that the operator of the Russian gas pipeline “North Stream 2 declared itself bankrupt after Western sanctions.
