The new round of restrictions will affect Iranian individuals and entities.
The EU plans to introduce sanctions against several Iranian individuals and legal entities for selling arms to Russia. EU officials and diplomats told POLITICO's Brussels Playbook.
The move comes amid reports that Russia has used Iranian drones to strike civilian targets in Ukraine and may soon receive Iranian missiles. According to American intelligence data cited by the New York Times, Tehran also sent instructors to Crimea, which is temporarily occupied by Russia.
According to officials and diplomats, the new round of sanctions will affect five Iranian individuals and three entities. The new restrictions will be in addition to sanctions already agreed upon against Iran's “morality police” for brutally harassing and killing Iranians who went out to protest.
Diplomats from EU countries can agree on the details of the new package as early as today, the day before of the upcoming summit.
These sanctions will be another serious defeat for negotiations on the renewal of the nuclear agreement with Iran. Negotiators have been working to restore the 2015 nuclear deal after former US President Donald Trump abandoned it in 2018.
“Frankly speaking, the nuclear deal no longer counts. We're used to the idea that it won't move forward,” said one senior European official.

Iran is secretly preparing to increase the supply of heavy weapons to Russia. In addition to shock drones, for the first time it is planned to supply Russians with Iranian-made surface-to-surface combat missiles.
