Sociologists spoke about how Ukrainians now communicate and what sources of information they choose.
72% of Ukrainians are constantly communicating with their relatives and friends now, during the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation , according to a poll conducted by the Rating Sociological Group. Another 48% constantly communicate with friends, 38% – with neighbors and 28% – with colleagues.
Today's situation, compared to April 2020, shows how different a war is from a pandemic in terms of its danger and anxiety. In particular, the share of those who are constantly in touch with relatives has grown from 27% to 72%. The same applies to communication with friends: growth from 15% to 48%.
The survey also showed that the weight of ways to obtain information has changed. Thus, since November 2021, central television has somewhat regained its position (from 56% to 62%) and dominates among the sources. Also significantly added groups and channels in messengers (from 13 to 42%), this can be explained by the speed and number of publications.
“War creates a high need for constant information, therefore, messengers meet such needs to the best of their ability – they can be read anywhere and at any time, this requires a smartphone and the Internet,” – said sociologists.
However, now the share of social networks has decreased (49% to 37%). Sociologists believe that they have been partially replaced by groups and channels in messengers. Because social networks, by their function, are no longer about receiving information, but about communication and the ability to share information. Receiving information from relatives and acquaintances has increased (from 14% to 28%), because they are often direct witnesses to events. Newspapers and magazines have lost popularity (from 11% to 6%) because they cannot keep up with the speed of events. But radio has become, on the contrary, more popular (from 10 to 15%), as it has become a kind of alternative to television.
