Banks will withdraw bills without compensation.
The National Bank introduced a ban for banks to accept business of Ukrainian hryvnia banknotes that were specially damaged. Now “they are not accepted in exchange, but are withdrawn for research.” There is no compensation for such bills. This is stated in NBU document No. 50-0006/58627 dated August 24, reports UBR.ua.
The regulator explained that there are reports of cases of intentional damage to cash: “Most likely, it is about the theft of such cash from the branches of Ukrainian banks located in the temporarily occupied territories and its delivery to Ukraine with the aim of destabilizing the situation in the financial sphere… The origin of the damaged banknotes hryvnias with three holes, banks explain them as receipts, primarily through payment devices that do not have the appropriate settings”.
The NBU states that in order to reduce the risks of damaged national currency banknotes with three drilled holes entering circulation, banks must ensure :
- before processing banknotes collected from payment devices, ensure a visual inspection of such banknotes and remove them as doubtful;
- separate questionable damaged banknotes of the national currency with three drilled holes from other questionable banknotes detected during the transfer; receiving and processing cash using appropriate equipment (detectors and banknote sorters);
- when damaged national currency banknotes with three drilled holes are received from individuals and legal entities for the purpose of their exchange, exchange shall not be carried out. Removed damaged banknotes of the national currency with three drilled holes should be sent for research to the National Bank.
