Creating a competitive military industry is far from Russian realities – ISW

Putin's initiative will not solve the existing problems of the military-industrial base and the supply chain.

The Russian president is preparing for a long war and tries to “manually” solve the problems faced by the Russian army in Ukraine. In an attempt to compensate for the shortage of shells and missiles, the Russian Federation purchased weapons systems from Iran and North Korea. But according to Vladimir Putin's latest statements about the need to create a competitive military industry, attempts are currently being made to revive the Russian military industry. Experts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believe that these measures will not solve the deep problems of the aggressor country.

At a meeting of the Coordinating Council of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the head of the Kremlin said that the government should ensure active competition between manufacturers of military weapons.

“The calls of Russian President Vladimir Putin to create a competitive Russian military industry are far from the real problems of the Russian supply chain and military -industrial base” – says the ISW report.

At most, Putin's intentions to revive the domestic military industry contrast with the real steps taken by the state leadership to continue military operations in Ukraine. Russia's dependence on the supply of weapons from countries that have been under severe sanctions for years gives a real assessment of whether Russian industry will be able to meet the needs of the army in a short period of time.
