History of the holiday

The history of the holiday is described in the Gospels. On the Sabbath, Jesus resurrected the righteous Lazarus, proving that he was the Son of God, and on Sunday he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The people of the city, who learned of the miracle of the resurrection, greeted Christ with shouts of “Hosanna!”, Usually meeting only the king.

They paved the way for Jesus with palm branches. As palm trees do not grow in Ukraine, they have been replaced by willow branches.

They are traditionally consecrated in the church. Sick children were also jokingly beaten with twigs, it was believed that this would help heal them.
