History of the Feast

At the heart of the feast is the biblical account of how Jesus rose after the crucifixion before being betrayed by one of his disciples. According to the Gospels, Christ knew that one of them would betray him, but not divulge the name of the traitor.

And so it happened: on Wednesday, Judas betrayed his teacher for 30 pieces of silver. Christ's trial took place on Good Friday, and his execution, the Savior, was crucified. Faithful disciples of Jesus removed him from the cross and buried him near Calvary, and closed the entrance to the tomb with a large stone.

On the third day after his crucifixion, Jesus was resurrected. Myrrh-bearing women came to his tomb, carrying fragrant oil to anoint the body of the deceased. But the cave was empty, and an angel appeared to the women, who told about the resurrection of the Savior.

It is believed that Mary Magdalene came to the Emperor Tiberius with the news of the resurrection of Christ. The emperor replied that he would believe it only when the egg in Mary's hand turned red. And a miracle happened – the egg changed color. That's why it became customary to paint eggs for Easter.
