The management of the retail chain justifies its position by “caring for people”.
Since the beginning of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, the French Auchan trade network has continued to operate in the aggressor country. CEO Yves Claude explained his position in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche.
Addressing the world community, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called on businesses to stop working in Russia. However, not all large companies agreed with this proposal, in particular, the Auchan supermarket chain will continue to operate in Russia.
“The most important thing for us is to keep our staff and ensure that our main mission is to continue to feed the people of these two countries [Russia and Ukraine]. We have never had another goal. I am ready to accept public opinion that disagrees with us. criticize, but we are open and active for the civilian population, “explains Yves Claude.

If Auchan leaves the Russian market, about 30,000 people will lose their jobs, as there are 231 supermarkets and online stores in Russia, while only 43 in Ukraine.
The CEO stressed that the company does not forget its employees who were forced to leave Ukraine. They provided assistance to Ukrainian staff, provided asylum, and provided employment elsewhere. Auchan also helps other Ukrainian refugees.
“We have provided more than 2,300 tons of food, 50,000 hygiene kits and donated more than 2 million euros. And our shareholders have decided to send part of the dividends to help refugees,” said Yves Claude.
It will be recalled that the United States is preparing sanctions against Russian companies supplying goods and services to the Russian army and intelligence.
