At least eight people died and thirty were hospitalized after a powerful explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana, Cuba. This was reported by CNN with reference to the President of Cuba.

The cause of the explosion was a gas leak. Officials expect the death toll to rise as rescuers dismantle the debris.

“All indications are that the blast was caused by an accident,” the Office of the President of Cuba said in a tweet. Witnesses described the incident as a “powerful explosion” that appeared to have destroyed buses and cars near a downtown hotel.

Hotel Saratoga is a “cult place” in Havana, where celebrities and officials have traditionally stayed.
