According to scientific citations, Ukrainian scientists rank only 225th in the world

This is directly related to the underfunding of science.

According to the indicator of scientific and publication impact, ie impact research on society, the usefulness and citation of scientific research, Ukraine ranked 225th in the world. At the same time, according to the indicator of scientific and publishing productivity, our scientists rank 42nd in the world. This means that we have produced quite a lot of scientific results, but their citations are very low, writes Oleksandr Kostiuk in his article for ZN.UA .

“The United States, Great Britain, and Germany are the top three countries in terms of scientific impact. These countries have the highest GDP in the world. Because the country's economy and the scientific impact of scientists are closely linked. This means that by investing in economic development, we can only hope for results if we invest in our science at the same time. This is called an innovative economy, “he said.

Kostyuk notes that since 2013, spending on Ukraine's economy in US dollars has halved, as has the number of scientists.

As for the motivation of a young scientist to be in science, it would be correct to call it “demotivation”, which does not add prospects for improving the quality of scientific research. The salaries of both academic and university scientists are 30-40% lower than the average salary in the country (UAH 14.3 thousand), ”the expert said, adding that in Canada, for example, the salary of a research university professor is higher. than twice the average salary in the country.

“Taken together, this makes our science inert, ie incapable of qualitative development of international research cooperation, which should result in access to research money and scientific publications with high impact “, – he points to the consequences of this situation.

At the same time, after the war, the world scientific community can help Ukrainian scientists to restore and further develop the research system in the country.
