Prosecutors said the couple intended to help Russia in its war against Ukraine.
criminal charges were filed for an alleged conspiracy to leak confidential medical data about military patients to Russia. This is reported by the US Department of Justice.
Jamie Lee Henry, a former major who was also a doctor at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and his wife, Anna Gabrielian< /strong>, are accused of conspiracy and improperly disclosing personal information about the health of patients at an army base.
According to the indictment, the pair conspired with representatives of the Russian Federation after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.
The couple wanted to help the Russian government by providing it with data “on the state of health of persons associated with the US government and military.”
To do this, they met with an undercover FSB agent who identified himself as a Russian official.< /p>
As Gabrielyan stated, she was motivated by “patriotism towards Russia, the desire to provide any assistance to Russia, even if it means release or imprisonment”.
During the meeting with the agent, she voluntarily involved her husband in the scheme, saying that he had information about the previous military training that the United States, among other things, provided to Ukraine.
According to the investigation, the husband also confirmed to the agent his loyalty to Russia and stated that he even planned to volunteer for the Russian army.
“I see what is happening in Ukraine now, the United States is using Ukrainians as a proxy for its own hatred of Russia,” he allegedly said agent.
The agent, in turn, encouraged them to read a book called Inside the Aquarium: The Making of a Master Soviet Spy, saying it would help them understand what they were supposed to be doing.
In the end, the soldier refused to provide medical information, saying it would violate the law, but his wife did not hesitate.
By the end of August, she had given the agent information about current and former military personnel and their spouses.
