“Silent terror. Chronicles of Hell” tells about the life of Ukrainians under occupation.
Director Elizaveta Tatarinova made a film about occupied Kherson, which was presented on YouTube on Tuesday, July 26.
The tape “Silent terror. “Chronicles of Hell” contains documentary footage and stories of people who managed to leave the occupation. The heroes of the film are the people of Kherson who survived kidnapping and torture, activists, volunteers, journalists.
This is the second film from the “Chronicles of Hell” cycle, created by the Ukrainian production company “TTB-Studio”, the screenwriter and director of which was a TV journalist Elizaveta Tatarinova. The first film “Mariupol. Chronicles of Hell“, which premiered in May, collected more than one and a half million views on Youtube and was shown on the air of leading Ukrainian, German, Austrian, Portuguese, Spanish, Canadian, Estonian and Latvian TV channels.
“Silent terror. Chronicles of Hell tells about life under occupation. About how Russian propaganda tries to present this life as peaceful and beautiful, but instead the occupying power kidnaps and tortures the townspeople, leaves Kherson people in informational isolation, does not allow them to leave the occupied region. In fact, several hundred thousand Ukrainian citizens were held hostage by the Russian military.
The most difficult part of working on the film, the authors admit, was finding people who would agree to testify about what is happening in the occupied region. Because despite the fact that they managed to leave, their relatives and friends remained in Kherson, who are in danger. “When the film was almost edited, the FSB broke into the family of the girl who agreed to be the main character of the film and filmed video diaries about life in an occupied village near Kherson. Somehow they found out about the activities of the activist. Fortunately, the girl was not injured, but we were forced to remove all episodes with her participation from the film and change the script in order not to expose a person to danger. Such are the realities of life in Ukrainian cities occupied by Russia,” says Elizaveta Tatarinova.
The events in the film unfold from the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine to the end of May – through the chronicle of life in Kherson. “What is happening in Kherson is very difficult to show on video. Because all the horror, all this silent terror happens at night in the basements. And I don't know what's better – when a rocket flies into your house or when you are put against a wall in some basement, where they bring you from your own home?” – says one of the heroes of the film.
Earlier ZN.UA told where to watch documentaries about a full-scale invasion.
